Family Days Out by Bus: England’s Free Child Travel Summer

For families looking for a lower-cost day out this August, the bus is unusually attractive. From 1 to 31 August 2026, children aged 5 to 15 can travel free on participating local bus services in England, while the national adult single-fare cap remains £3 on participating routes outside London.

The scheme is useful precisely because it can make ordinary trips more achievable: a museum in the next town, a seaside afternoon, a country park, a market or a heritage site that might otherwise involve fuel and parking costs. It is best treated as a practical transport offer rather than a promise that every attraction suddenly becomes cheap.

Check the route before setting out

There are limits. The £3 national fare cap does not cover every service, and participation by operators matters. London has its own fare arrangements, including free bus travel for eligible children through the capital’s existing system. Families should therefore check the relevant operator before building a day around a particular route.

That small amount of planning can open up a different style of summer outing. Bus travel slows the journey down, removes the search for parking and makes the route itself part of the day. For children, it can also turn a familiar local area into something that feels more like a trip.

The best approach is simple: choose one destination, check the outward and return services, leave enough time for delays and avoid trying to cram too much into the itinerary. A modest day out often works better than an over-planned one.
